For movie fans waiting to see Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince the wait is finally over! Fans across the country began to make the trek to the movies last week and over this weekend.... As for fans of the book series we know how the story ends and most of us accept that movies alter away from the books story line; for entertainment value. Most readers appreciate both movie and book story lines and how they come to terms with the plot. With summer reading on my Most Important Things Kids Can Do List.....I love that the movie excites kids into re-reading the book series.

Katie Monnin has put together a fantastic site on using graphic novels...or comic books as we would have called them...to teach children to read. She has a wealth of resources listed on her page. She has information on conferences, interviews with artists, other comic and graphic novel sites, and lots of book and graphic novel selections. If you have a reticent reader in your household I'd highly recommend reading her site and getting some ideas for that summer reading list! I'd particularly recommend Françoise Mouly's books. They look like stories my girls would have liked to read...and ones that I would have enjoyed reading with them.
In our quest to share fun educational moments that children and families experience it came to mind that we should play off of current events that children are learning through the news and from their educators.
Parents Rule - Iranian Style Democracy seemed to be a perfect point to highlight Freedom of Choice & Freedom of Speech in the world prospective of children and their place in the family nucleus! Fun...and to the point on many levels.
Who is in charge in your family? Kids or parents?
